Ok first a back ground
I am part cz from dads side of the family.
So yea I know a good kolache
1pm so a bit late in the day
Hot humid day...
The kolaches here are ok..
Unless I got them on a bad day..
3 cherries and more dough than filling.
Not like the other pix..
And yes I should to have taken pix!
Dough has a real good flavor here.
It just was a bit tough...
Maybe over worked?..
Or it can be the weather...
Yea it is one of those kind of dough that is tricky to get it perfect!
2.00 each, and by weight it was worth it.
Yea I will be back...
I was in a hurry... maybe next time I will have more time to talk with the owner.
The pix here on yelp show a sausage role that looks good
And would be good with this style of sweet bagel dough...
I need to bring him a dozen of my kolaches...
Then he can have a taste of the good stuff!
I need to ask if they have sweet poppy seed kolaches
They are tricky to get the filling right..
But they are killer!
Try the Hy-Vee in Cedar Rapids iowa that is close to 16th ave.
Cz village area of CR..
They have some real good ones..
And are a fluffy dough style.. cost 1.00 each.
Kinda tricky to get in and out of this place...
only entrance is from west bound university..
Only exit is to west bound university...
North side of the road in the dr plaza.
Small parking lot. Off street parking.
And steps... so plan for a couple of steps if you are handy caped.
All in all
Yea I will be back! -

WOW!!!! fantastic experience
Walked in and was promptly greeted, clean location, nicely decorated, welcoming and tells a story of what it is and where it came from.
Next.... needed to get details on these yummy balls of bread and the treats they hold. I went for the Big Play named after the owner. It did not disappoint loaded with Eggs, Bacon, Ham, Sausage and Cheese with a side a sausage gravy for dipping! Really, it's not heavy at all. It just hit the spot, I was full and satisfied. The bread on the outside is just a tad sweet but compliments everything perfect! You can eat it there or take with you. He warmed it up for me, HEAVEN!!
They also do catering and events. I'd recommend to anyone wanting to eat local, support a local business and of course, great grub!! -

This place is a GREAT grab and go breakfast/lunch spot! I had a chance to chat with the owner and kind of get his story. Long story short, he's from Texas and loves kolaches. His wife decided to try making them and home and they turned out amazing! They've sold these at the farmers market and got into this brick and mortar about a year ago. Have been here ever since!
A kolach is nothing more than a type of pastry that has stuff inside. In this case, they usually have breakfast still fillings like bacon and cheese. They also have sweet ones with cream cheese or jams. They dough is super pillow-y and goes great in both savory and sweet options. I rarely make it out this way but when I do, I will not definitely make it a point to stop in. It's not much of a sit down spot but they do have a couple high top seats just in case you wanted to hang out.
Please, tell your friends and spread the word! -

This place is amazing, been looking for great kolaches since moving from Texas! Great selection, great service, highly recommend. Make sure to get the homemade hot sauce!

Whoo! My Houston, Texas brother (not literal brother) came through and delivered for you Iowans! A taste of Texas German cuisine right in central Iowa! This is how we get down with a savory breakfast in H-town.
Decadent meat and cheese filled pastries at a fair price, especially considering the location of the restaurant. There's even a window where you can see the staff baking the goods, a perk I love.
I met the owner at the Des Moines Farmer's Market, and made sure to check out this restaurant the next time I was in Des Moines. He delivered.
